If you live in the State of New Jersey, you have the right to place a freeze on your credit files. Potential creditors will be unable to access your credit without your knowledge. A security freeze can also help prevent identify theft. If you should decide to open new credit you will need to release the freeze. You will also need to release the freeze if you are applying for a new job or new insurance and they need to do a background check. Placing the security freeze is free but lifting it for a specific creditor or for a specific period of time will cost but no more then $5.00 each time. It’s a small price to pay when you consider how easy it is for someone to steal your information. Freezing your credit file will not affect your score. A creditor will only see a message that states the file is frozen. Freezing your account will not stop you from receiving pre-approved credit offers. You can stop pre-approved credit offers by calling the Federal Trade Commission at 888-567-8688 or online at www.optoutprescreen.com. Freezing your account does not automatically freeze your spouses account. Each must make a separate request via certified letters to each credit reporting agency. To place a freeze write to the addresses below and include the information requested by each.
